Syracuse Sweeps Watertown in 2023 GDFL Division Rivalry
Syracuse,New York-In the first meeting of this 2023 GDFL season between the Syracuse Strong and the Watertown Red & Black we saw a battle in the first half that turned into a bit of a route in the second half. Syracuse won that contest by a score of 31 - 9.
The second encounter this season between the Strong and the Red & Black started out in a similar fashion; Watertown was clearly prepared for this game.
After a quick three and out for the Syracuse Strong, Watertown blocks a punt attempt and earns perfect field position in Syracuse territory. After a three and out, the Red & Black gets on the board first and takes an early 3 - 0 lead with a 20 yard field goal at the 10:51 mark in the first quarter.
After a little back and forth over five possessions, the Red & Black puts together a successful 80 yard drive and increases their lead to 10 - 0 with a 22 yard touchdown pass.
In their next possession, the Strong returns the favor by putting together a 70 yard offensive drive resulting in a 20 yard touchdown pass from QB - Chris Davidson to WR - Sultani Campbell with just 21 seconds left in the second quarter, cutting the Watertown lead to 10 - 7 heading into the half.
After an impressive 73 yard drive by Watertown to start the second half, Syracuse forces a fumble near the goal line, taking possession.
The Strong then puts together a near 100 yard drive, capped off by a 42 yard touchdown run by Dewayne “Flash” Gordon and an extra point kick by Tom Stadnicki to give the Strong a 14 - 10 lead over the Red & Black.
The Red & Black would drive the field again, this time settling for a field goal, bringing the score to 14 - 13 in favor of the Strong.
In the next possession, the Strong powers it’s way down the field, eventually punching it in from 5 yards out with a touchdown run from Ishmeik “Loodie” Allen, increasing the Strong lead to 20 - 13, after the Strong came up short on the extra point attempt.
The Red & Black continued to play tough on offense, moving the ball down the field but would eventually come up short.
The Strong would strike again on its next possession with a 83 yard tailback pass from RB - Ishmeik “Loodie” Allen to WR - Sultani Campbell, with another extra point from Tom Stadnicki bringing us to a final score of 27 - 13 in favor of the Strong.
The Syracuse Strong improves to 4 - 0 (5 - 0 overall).
