Local investors investigate return of the Nashville Storm
Nashville Franchise Seeking Information for Entrance into GDFL
MEMPHIS- Nashville has been synonymous for being a hotbed for football talent. Through the years, franchises in the Music City have fielded teams that were the top in the country. This week, some local investors approached the Gridiron Developmental Football League offices to inquire about bringing the Nashville Storm name out of mothballs and back into playing the playing fields.
“The Storm name speaks for itself,” said GDFL chief executive officer Charles Thompson. “Their first two years in the league were special. They are the only Nashville franchise to win a GDFL national championship.
I must admit that the call I received was exciting. The GDFL will bring them in with open arms, if they choose to field an organization.”
In 2015, the Storm traveled to New Orleans and defeated the Crescent City Kings for the GDFL national championship. The following year, they had to travel to Oklahoma to retain their title but lost to the Oklahoma Thunder. In 2017, they shut down operations for the season. In 2018, the Middle Tennessee Bulldawgs, from the Nashville area, joined the GDFL.
The Bulldawgs enjoyed success going to the championship both years but also lost to the Thunder. Middle Tennessee has also recommitted on Friday that they would be returning to the GDFL in 2020.
“It is important to have a franchise in Nashville,” said GDFL chief operations officer Tracey Hardney-Scott. “Geographically it has major interstates intersecting the city. Plus, you can’t argue about the strong legacy the name has. Part of my job is protecting the shield. The investors that approached us have been vetted by us and we are excited to keep talking to them.”
Rumors are circulating that the investors would handle the financial piece and the GDFL office would run the team. The investors have approached local high schools and Tennessee State University as a potential home field for the team. The league office has not given any comment on who the investors are because of the non-disclosure agreement that was been reached.
