Former Blast linebacker takes the reigns as new head coach

Memphis,Tenn- After spending over a decade as a player for the Memphis Blast, linebacker Lawrence “Torpedo” Miller, is preparing himself to be the team’s new head coach. After being one of the most productive defenders on the unit last season, the 36-year old told Blast Media that he initially wasn’t sure about taking over such a big role.

“When I was asked would I consider taking the position of head coach by Mr. Thompson, I thought to myself ‘I’m not ready.’,” Miller said. “My response was ‘Let me think about it, I’ll get back to you.’ As the week went on I prayed and asked God what was the right move for me, and I got my answer.”

Shortly after receiving that answer, Miller let Blast owner, Charles Thompson, know that he’d gladly accept the position Thompson also spoke with Blast Media about what showed him that Miller was the right man for the job, and he said that his hard work and drive made him a perfect selection.

“I can’t think of a better individual who can lead our team into the 2020 season and beyond,” Thompson said. “Lawrence has truly worked his way through the ranks from being a non-starter to a six-time GDFL All-Pro.”

What will also help Miller in his transition to the head coaching role is that he already has some experience coaching with the team.

In explaining the qualifications of Miller, he outlined his previous coaching experience as another catalyst for him to earn the job.  “He graduated from being a player to becoming a special teams coach back in 2016,” Thompson said. “He eventually became our defensive coordinator and helped the Blast win the East Division Championship and make it to the Impact Conference Championship game that season.”

For Miller, this role isn’t just a job for him, but a major responsibility that he’s extremely grateful for. He explained to Blast Media the significance of his new position and is a culmination of all of his hard work.

“To be leading the Memphis Blast as the head man means so much to me,” Miller said. “For many years I was the ‘little giant’ in the middle of the defense. I was the vocal leader on and off the field. Now thanking God for such an awesome blessing and Thanking Mr. Thompson for believing that he is capable of being the head coach.I now get the chance to take over and lead this franchise. I’m truly honored and humble to take on this great task.
